Day on the Sunshine Coast

Australia and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It is also a day to remember all of the veteran’s in Australia. But, what it meant for us is that we got a long weekend to spend on the Sunshine Coast.

After arriving in Brisbane and settling into the apartment for the week, we took the train/bus to the Sunshine Coast on Friday evening, which was about a three hour journey to the town of Noosa, north of Brisbane.

Since Brisbane has more tropical weather than Melbourne, it was warm and sunny most of the weekend. On Saturday, we decided to take it easy and head to Noosa’s main beach for some window shopping and relaxing by the waves. We also made an appearance at the hotel pool. What a rough life!

By Sunday we were ready for some excitement and Scott has been claiming that he knew how to sail, so we rented a catamaran to sail the Noosa River. Turned out to be a beautiful day and we got the hang of the sailing thing after getting stuck on a sandbar in the middle of the river, which we decided was a good place to stop to have eat the picnic lunch that we had packed.

On Monday, we headed to the Australia Zoo, home of the late Steve Irwin (the Crocodile Hunter). We took the Aussie Zoo shuttle, which was complete with Crocodile Hunter shows playing on the tellie.

We got to see kangaroos, wombats, koalas, and all sorts of other animals, but what we were really there to see were the crocodiles. Or first experience with the crocs was in the Crococeum, which was the main stage for the shows. We got to see first hand how they feed the crocs and how to defend ourselves against an attack in the wild. After that we wondered around to see of the other crocs they had at the zoo, which were mostly caught in the wild by Steve himself.

<div id="attachment_1043"
