{"id":1094,"date":"2010-05-18T21:57:40","date_gmt":"2010-05-19T04:57:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=1094"},"modified":"2010-09-02T04:54:37","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T11:54:37","slug":"sailing-the-whitsundays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=1094","title":{"rendered":"Sailing the Whitsundays"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Whitsundays are a group of 74 islands off of the Queensland coast.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the islands are designated as national park and are not inhabited, however a few have some luxury resorts on them.\u00c2\u00a0 The area is also home to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n<p>We booked a 3-day\/2-night trip aboard Kiana, a 60-foot sail boat that held 14 passengers and three crew members including a skipper, cook, and dive master.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1103\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/DSCF01021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1103\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1103 \" title=\"DSCF0102\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/DSCF01021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thejohnsonsjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/DSCF01021.jpg 800w, https:\/\/thejohnsonsjournal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/DSCF01021-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1103\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our boat, Kiana<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After spending the night in Airlie Beach we boarded the boat about 8:30 in the morning.\u00c2\u00a0 After settling in our cabin we set off to Whitsunday Island, the largest of the islands.\u00c2\u00a0 When we reached the island we were tethered onto Tongue Bay for a short bushwalk (hike) to the lookout over Whitehaven Beach.\u00c2\u00a0 Whitehaven Beach is said to be one of the whitest beaches in the world and one of the most photographed locations in Australia.\u00c2\u00a0 We were not disappointed! The beach is the prettiest we have seen so far.\u00c2\u00a0 And after taking lots of photos were made our way down to the beach for some sunbaking (sunbathing) and swimming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Another sunset photo for about 50 that we took<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The next morning we were woken up at 5:30 am for breakfast and sunrise.\u00c2\u00a0 We were in the water by 7:30 am for our first dive.\u00c2\u00a0 We were disappointed at the visibility, but were able to spot a reek shark, which was pretty cool.\u00c2\u00a0 After the dive we set off to the Outer Reef, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1118\" style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a about 3 hours and we got to see three dolphins who swam along side the boat for a bit.\u00c2\u00a0 When we arrived we were in the water again for another dive.\u00c2\u00a0 The visibility this time was much better and after the dive we got in again for some snorkeling.\u00c2\u00a0 Although the coral was not as brightly colored as in Fiji, there was definitely a lot more of it and the fish were a lot larger as well.<\/p>\n<p>On the last day were were again up at 5:30 am and we suited up for our last dive.\u00c2\u00a0 This turned out to be the best dive of the trip.\u00c2\u00a0 We again saw a reef shark and lots of colorful coral and fish.\u00c2\u00a0 We were diving in a canyon between two rock walls, which was pretty cool.\u00c2\u00a0 After the dive, we headed back to the main land.\u00c2\u00a0 Since the wind was pretty strong we were able to get the sails out, which Scott enjoyed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1102\" style=\"width: 370px\" I was sure glad to be back on land for a hot shower and to sleep in a real bed.\u00c2\u00a0 We went out for drinks with some of the other passengers before heading on our separate ways.\u00c2\u00a0 This was definitely one of the most best things we have done\u00c2\u00a0 on our trip so far.\u00c2\u00a0 After this week we will be making our way back to Melbourne, but we have enjoyed our time in
