Melbourne is all about Australian Rules Football or “footy.” \u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0Some 10 teams out of 16 teams in the league are from the Melbourne area.<\/p>\n

Last weekend was the footy preliminary finals (or semi-finals) at the Melbourne\u00c2\u00a0Cricket\u00c2\u00a0Ground (MCG). \u00c2\u00a0 Thats right, they play footy on a cricket ground or “oval.” \u00c2\u00a0 So to join in all of the\u00c2\u00a0excitement, we went with Rachel and Carl to the St. Kilda v. Western Bulldogs game.<\/p>\n

As you can see from the scoreboard below, scoring in AFL is complicated. You get 6 points for a goal (between the center tall posts) and 1 point for a “behind” which is between the outer shorter posts. So as you can see 12 + 10 = 82. Makes sense right?<\/p>\n

St. Kilda winning the game<\/p><\/div>\n

This week has been filled with footy luncheons, drink nights, and even a parade. \u00c2\u00a0The grand final will take place on Saturday afternoon between St. Kilda and Collingwood, both\u00c2\u00a0Melbourne\u00c2\u00a0based teams. \u00c2\u00a0We will be doing the traditional Aussie thing (well when you are not going to the game in person) and are having an all Aussie BBQ and watching the game on TV.
