{"id":2419,"date":"2012-11-09T08:15:27","date_gmt":"2012-11-09T15:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=2419"},"modified":"2012-11-09T08:15:27","modified_gmt":"2012-11-09T15:15:27","slug":"propaganda-and-street-food-in-shanghai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=2419","title":{"rendered":"Propaganda and Street Food in Shanghai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We were worried that visiting Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai would be too much big city for us, but we were\u00c2\u00a0pleasantly\u00c2\u00a0surprised how much we liked Shanghai.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/310\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Chairman Mao\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8745\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Even Chairman Mao enjoys the views in Shanghai<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t been to too many museums on this trip,\u00c2\u00a0preferring\u00c2\u00a0to get out an about in each place, but in Shanghai we visited two\u00c2\u00a0excellent\u00c2\u00a0ones, the Propaganda Poster Museum and the Shanghai Museum.\u00c2\u00a0The Propaganda Museum gave us a tour of Propaganda Posters from the 1950s up until just after Chairman Mao died and they were no longer used. \u00c2\u00a0They also had a collection of &#8220;calendar girl&#8221; posters from the 1930s and after reading Shanghai Girls, I found them to be very\u00c2\u00a0fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>The Shanghai Museum had a very extensive display of bronzes and even had a display of how they are made. They also had a much less extensive and impressive display of 2 small traditional fishing boats. There was way more to the museum, but after a couple exhibits, we&#8217;re about museum&#8217;d out.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to my cousin Lisa&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0recommendation,\u00c2\u00a0on our first night we headed to the famous <a href=\"http:\/\/gochina.about.com\/od\/wheretoeatinshanghai\/gr\/SH_DinTaiFung.htm\">Din Tai Fung<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0for their xiao long bao or soup dumpling.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/310\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Soup Dumplings\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8744\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">They were pretty delicious and fun to eat too!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We have also enjoyed the range of street food on offer in China, so we decided to spend a day scouring the streets of Shanghai to try some local\u00c2\u00a0specialties\u00c2\u00a0including fried dumplings and stinky tofu.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/313\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Fried dumplings\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8768\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">We had to wait for this batch of fried dumplings to be finished which was actually pretty fun to watch the whole process.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/313\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Stinky Tofu\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8772\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The stinky tofu is fried non-stinky tofu with a pretty pungent sauce added afterwards.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The former French Concession has turned into a trendy international boutique shopping and dining scene. \u00c2\u00a0It was a great place to wander around and explore. \u00c2\u00a0Scott was excited to find out that there was a new microbrewery in town, so we had to stop by for a drink.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/313\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Boxing Cat Brewery\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8774\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A better pint than most of the local beers we&#8217;ve had on the trip.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Okay, a non-food\/beverage picture.<\/p>\n<p>On our last day, we checked out a cute little historic market where you could buy all sorts of items to remember your time in China including, at one shop, about a bazillion types of chopsticks.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/albums\/312\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Chopsticks\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/8763\/medium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">They actually look like pointy Japanese chopsticks, not Chinese style<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We were worried that visiting Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai would be too much big city for us, but we were\u00c2\u00a0pleasantly\u00c2\u00a0surprised how much we liked Shanghai.
