{"id":2535,"date":"2012-12-24T22:13:46","date_gmt":"2012-12-25T05:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=2535"},"modified":"2012-12-25T09:19:05","modified_gmt":"2012-12-25T16:19:05","slug":"one-last-world-herirtage-site-angkor-wat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thejohnsonsjournal.com\/?p=2535","title":{"rendered":"One last World Herirtage Site, Angkor Wat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Our last stop in Cambodia before heading back to California was the town of Siem Reap, which is the closest town to Angkor Wat. \u00c2\u00a0The area around Siem Reap includes a huge number of temples, both Hindu and Buddhist, built by the kings of the Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th centuries.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9326\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is possibly the temple used in the Tomb Raider movie, or maybe it was another one that looks exactly the same.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9400\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">This temple gate has been completely engulfed by the Strangler Fig tree.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9346\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">One more cool temple, because this one had lots of giant faces.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The area was eventually abandoned in the 15th century when threats of invasion from Thailand forced the capital to be moved to Phnom Penh. \u00c2\u00a0Angkor Wat, the most famous of the temples, is the largest Hindu temple in the world. It was built in the\u00c2\u00a0first half of 12th century by King Suryavarman II and remains one of the finest\u00c2\u00a0monuments in the world.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9360\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"675\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angkor Wat &#8220;artistically framed&#8221;, or just &#8220;through a doorway and partially obstructed by a tree&#8221;. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We spent two days touring the many temples and\u00c2\u00a0were fortunate enough to be able to see both sunrise and sunset at Angkor Wat. \u00c2\u00a0 Both made for some amazing photo\u00c2\u00a0opportunities.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9375\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angkor Wat at Sunset<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9376\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunset the other way.<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/photos.thejohnsonsjournal.com\/photos\/9386\/medium.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sun Also Rises<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We stayed in Siem Reap for 6 days to try to include some down time for relaxation.
