Moreton Island Extreme Adventure

Posted: May 4th, 2010 by Courtney

For Sunday we booked the Extreme Adventure Day Trip to Moreton Island, the third largest sand island in the world.  We got up early to catch our shuttle at 7:00 am for the ride to Moreton Bay, just outside of Brisbane.  When we got there we boarded the Micat for a 1-hour ferry ride across the bay to the island.

Once on land, our first adventure was snorkeling the islands 15 ship wrecks, called the Tangalooma Wrecks.  These vessels were deliberately sunk on the landward side of Moreton Island to form a breakwall for small boats and now have become a great spot for snorkeling.  Although there was not a lot of coral, there were lots of fish and the wrecks were pretty cool to swim around.  We also saw a wollongong shark lurking in one of the wrecks.

After having lunch on the beach we set off in our 4WD vehicle for some off-roading into the gum tree forests of the National Park.

The next stop was the Desert for some sandboarding action. The Deserts dunes can reach about 30 meters high and you can get up to about 60kph on the way down.  After some quick instructions were were off sliding down the dune.

A little bit sandy, but still having a great time

The last stop was the Blue Lagoon, a fresh water lake in the middle of the island.  We got to cool off and relax after a hot afternoon of sandboarding.  It was just what we needed before getting back on the ferry and heading home to Brissie.  On the way back to the ferry we got to see some dolphins swimming just off the beach of the island.  What a great day!
