Normandy, the land of Calvados and Camembert

Posted: August 22nd, 2012 by Courtney

Our next stop was the port town of Honfleur on the coast of Normandy.  We found the town to be very touristy, but enjoyed some nice seafood and left the following day.

The next morning we drove into the heart of the Calvados region.  We stayed in an cute little B&B in the very small town of Bellou.  Stephanie, the owner made us an amazing dinner each night from local produce, which was the highlight our stay.  One evening we even got to drive her grandfathers old army Jeep.  She told us that when her grandfather was a boy his family owned a hotel in Paris and during World War II when the American troops came in to liberate the city he remembers them stopping  to giving him chewing gum.  He had such good memories of this time in his life that he built and restored about 4 army Jeeps over the years. This one now belongs to Stephanie and her family.

During our couple of days in Bellou went went to try some of the local specialties including Calvados, cider and cheese.

The most well known cheese in France and probably the world is the Camembert, which is of course from the town of Camembert.  We went to visit the last farm using the traditional method to make their cheese and had a tasting.
