2 Goats, 2 Chickens and 3 Cats

Posted: October 11th, 2012 by Scott

So, where did we leave off…

Let’s be honest, we’ve really been bad about this site and the thousands, I mean hundr… ok, maybe dozens of people who follow us are on the edge of their seats, waiting to hear what other craziness is happening.

Well, hopefully after this break we’re reinvigorated and are going to keep at it like the good ol’ days.

Ok, we so we took care of some animals! Strange way to holiday in Europe you say? Possibly, but we’ve (ok I’ve) actually been interested in having animals for a while now. Not cats and dogs, but real farm type animals. So when Courtney said she found a house sitting gig in the French Pyrenees with goats and chickens I said where do I sign up?

The house and animals belong to a British couple who’ve been living in France for the past 8 years. They were off to the coast for a holiday of their own, thus needed somebody to tend to the house and such.

The goats were impatient eaters.

The goats were pretty simple, some food in the morning and afternoon, fresh hay in their house and a little run around the yard to eat any flower in sight and they were happy as clams.

They were pretty darn cute though!

The chickens were not too much different. Fill up the food trough in the morning, clean out their coup (and steal an egg or two) then close them up at night so the foxes don’t get them and they would cluck their way around the yard all day. The only trouble came when they would relieve themselves on the patio. They do make a bit of a mess.

The chickens were unruly, but provided us with plenty of eggs.

I can understand how these animals could be so content though. They talk about happy cows in California, but do any of them have a view of the mountains like this from their pen?

This is the view that the goats had!

Since the animals really only needed tending in the morning and evening. It gave us plenty of time during the days to check out the local areas and get some hiking in. We made two hiking trips into the Pyrenees during the week, and a trip across the border to Spain for some tapas and cheap Rioja wine!

The view of the village we started our hike in.

Somebody wasn’t quite prepared for this hike.

We had a great time house sitting and told them to let us know next time they needed somebody. Maybe it would be a good excuse for us to pop back over to France!
