Quick stop in Slovenia and Austria

Posted: October 16th, 2012 by Scott

From Croatia our plan was to head to Munich for Oktoberfest.  The best way to do this seemed to be to go through Ljubljana, Slovenia and Salzburg, Austria before taking a train to Munich.

Although nether of these cities were “must sees” on our list of places to visit, we loved them both.  Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital city had the great cafe culture that Croatia had, but less touristy.   We took a walking tour with a local and learn about the rise and fall of Yugoslavia and the effect it has had on Slovenia.

Courtney is touching the nose of the sculptor on the door. Apparently for good luck.

One of the guardian dragons which is Ljubljana’s icon.

Salzburg was a pretty little town with great Austrian-German cuisine and friendly beer halls.  We tried the local Augustiner beer which went great with sausage and sauerkraut.

This is the castle in Salzburg, up on a hill above the old town.

We took a Sound of Music tour which went to the Von Trapp family house in the movie and many other scenes.

The “Sound of Music” gazebo! We almost broke into song!

We even got to get out of the city and take a hike in the mountains around Salzburg for great views of the city below.

Several people were paragliding off the summit at Gaisberg Mountain.
